Can you believe the end of this school year is just about 6 weeks away?  In some ways we are winding down–reviewing basic skills and in other ways, ramping up the challenging lessons.  I’m not expecting proficiency but I would like the children to, at least, be exposed to new works and be invited to test their abilities.  I have examined the MSLT Goals of the Montessori Kindergarten Program and by graduation we will have surpassed them!  Yay!  I have also reviewed the Douglas County first-grade expectations, and I believe our graduates enrolled in first grade next year will be well prepared.  And, children repeating kindergarten will have a positive experience as well.  Next month, I will provide a few ideas to keep your child fresh and excited for the new school year.
Last month we had a ton of fun with St. Patrick’s shenanigans.  Making the leprechaun magic rocks is easy.  Make a paste mixture of baking soda, green food coloring and water.  Heavily coat a coin (either plastic or real) and mold it into the shape of a rock.  Let the rock dry for at least 24 hours-longer if possible.  The luck lephrechaun rock can then be “washed” in a bowl or jar of vinegar.  Our leprechaun hid the rocks and the Kindies had an exciting time hunting for them and washing them to see if the leprechaun left a surprise or a trick (no coin).  Our  MSLT leprechaun was generous with surprises!  We also used baking soda and vinegar with the volcanoes the children created for the sound of the week-V. This school year seems heavy with experiments and crafts using baking soda and vinegar.  And we have a few more ideas before the school year is complete!
Journals are complete with entries from A to Z.  I cannot wait for you to see the progress your child made through the year.  The children will receive their journals at graduation.  We will continue to practice penmanship in the mornings by writing stories, copy-writing and moveable alphabet.
