Kindergarten is starting to fall into a groove. I have divided the kindergarteners into two groups–5 year olds and upcoming 5 year olds. Seeing as all the upcoming 5 years olds will actually turn 5 this month, we will be voting on names for each group. By dividing the children into two groups, I am better able to provide lessons tailored to each group and individualized assistance. So far, it is working out GREAT!
We begin each day with a lesson followed by an assignment. Both groups come together at the end of the day to either listen to a story, answer the “question of the day” or recite affirmations. We are currently reading a primer from Elson Basic Readers. It is stamped “Board of Education, City of New York, July 15, 1934.” I believe this Reader belonged to my mother. She would have been 4 years old. The children are loving the simple short stories. I am impressed with their comprehension and good listening skills. The “question of the day” will vary from very simple (What is the color of your bedroom walls?) to a more creative thought provoking question (What could you. have done to help a friend today?) Shrugs and “I don’t know” are unacceptable answers. We are stretching and growing our brains! We have a list of about 12 affirmations we recite at least once a week. Ask your kindergartener if they remember any of them.
Journal writing is an important component to our curriculum. The kindergarteners write twice a week during the morning work cycle. Tuesdays are for copy writing a sentence or phrase relating to the sound of the week (For example, if the letter is “b” the sentence might be: The busy boys bounced basketballs and blew big bubbles before going bowling.) On Thursdays the children copy write a question and their answer. We are working towards answering the questions in full sentences.
We are planning an outing to Timberline Park on October 31. We plan to leave MSLT at 1:30 and return approximately 2:30. Permission slips will go home this week. Thank you for returning them as soon as possible. Volunteers to help supervise are always appreciated!
Welcome Graham Chevalier to the kindergarten class!
