Hello September!  I’m excited to begin offering more academic work to be able to informally assess the Kindergarteners–their skill levels and individual needs.  After this initial assessment I will be able to determine a curriculum that best meets the needs of the group.   We will work as a community/group until basic skills are met and then I will be able to provide extensions to the students that are ready for more challenging works.  The fun begins!
Here are “potential” lessons for September:
penmanship-upper and lowercase–t, m, s, b, a
sounds –see above letters
addition with counters (lateral and vertical equations)
planets and the universe
teen board
sequencing
alphabet order
rhyming
earth–continents and oceans
odd and even numbers
recognizing beginning sounds
Here are the words to a song we sing almost everyday as a reminder to start writing at the top of letters or numbers:
We always start our letters (numbers) at the top
We always start our letters (numbers) at the top
We start at the top and at the bottom we  will stop
We always start our letters (numbers) at the top!
Also, we refer to the lines on lined paper as the upper line, mid line (dotted line) and the lower line.
Tracing is a great activity to help your child gain control of his/her hand for writing.  Using a simple coloring book, place a sheet of tracing paper over a picture and allow your child to trace the picture with a graphite pencil (like a #2 pencil).  As your child gains more control, the picture to be traced should increase in details.  This is a fun way to improve penmanship.
I hope to send all paper assignments home on Thursday in your child’s morning class folder.
As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email.
