What a great year we have had!  The Kinders have far exceeded my expectations.  They are very prepared for their academic journeys. And, they are bursting with socialization….they remind me of a litter of puppies! A big thank you to Miss Dawn for filling in for me while I was on vacation and Mr. John for his lesson on Fungi and Animal Kingdoms. What a great community we have at MSLT!  This month we are focusing on graduation, a more challenging book report (Bob’s Tales) and a few academic lessons.

As promised I would like to chat about ideas to keep your child engaged during the summer. My first thought is NOT to push academic work such as workbooks, worksheets or computer programs that teach academics.  The children have worked hard and need a break. What I would suggest is to read, read and read some more.  I can not stress enough how important it is for you to read to your child. You can read signs as you drive, read menus, read chapter books, read picture books, read ingredients, etc. And, play games. They will hone their skills and build confidence through play. There are board games such as Sequence, The Game of Life, Sorry, Monopoly Jr., Mancala, Trouble, Bingo, Checkers and Dominoes to name just a few of the classics. Allow your child to help plan a meal, shop, prepare a recipe, set the table, etc. Planning a meal or an outing helps develop executive functioning skills. (Think Khari and his Dragon Festival!). Driving games as simple as counting items (cows, houses with chimneys, motorcycles….you get the picture) keep children observant. You can use road signs for finding the alphabet or counting. Write stories together — allow your child to use phonetic spelling (the sounds they hear). Try having a family dinner and playing Would You Rather.  Mostly, have FUN this summer!  School will begin again soon enough. There will be a time for review and they will all catch back up.  Knowledge does not disappear!
It has truly been an honor to work with this special group of Kindergarteners. Thank you for trusting me with their care and academics. Miss Lisa
